Range
Even if you go for the smaller, 52kWH battery ID.4 there's still a decent range of 211-213 miles. That's the claimed range, however, and a more realistic average will be around 200 miles in the summer and 175 in the winter. If you need more range then the 77kWh battery and Pro Performance models will be more suitable with 316 to 322 miles (claimed) on offer – the higher spec models are at the lower end of that range thanks to their larger wheels, while the entry-level 'Life' trim gives 322 miles. In our tests, the top-spec 77kWh car in 'Max' trim was averaging around 307 miles in summer conditions. The four-wheel-drive sporty GTX models, meanwhile, give between 291 and 301 miles (claimed).
Battery
Just like its ID.3 smaller brother, the ID.4 comes in two battery sizes, 52kWh and 77kWh, and helpfully that's the useable capacity quoted – Volkswagen hasn't rounded up the numbers to make them sound more appealing. The battery packs are neatly positioned in the middle of the car, improving the amount of space inside. The 52kWh battery is hooked up to a rear-mounted electric motor giving two power outputs – 146bhp which goes by the name of 'Pure' and the 'Pure Performance' which gets 168bhp. The 77kWh battery, meanwhile, goes by the name of 'Pro Performance' and comes with 201bhp in 'Family' and 'Max' trims, or 296bhp and four-wheel-drive in the GTX and GTX Max versions.
Charging
The ID.4 has an 11kW on-board charger and comes with a Type 2 cable as standard, which is suitable for hooking up to a home wallbox or an on-street fast charger. Plug in with these and the 52kWh cars will take 8 hours 30 minutes for a full charge, or 12 hours 15 minutes for the 77kWh cars. Both cars take around 30 minutes to get to 80% when being rapid charged – the 52kWh cars can charge up to 100kW, while 77kWh models can charge up to 125kW. Volkswagen can even sell you one of its own home wallbox chargers called 'ID. Charger', and ID.4 owners can sign up to VW's We Charge service which can gives access to 150,000 charging points across Europe and preferential prices for the Ionity rapid charing network. If you need a charging cable to hook up to a three-pin domestic socket, Volkswagen will relieve you of £219.
