Built on the same underpinnings as the ID.3, the ID.4 comes in a larger SUV package and now has an impressive range of models in the line-up.

Ginny Says

“It seems VW have nailed some of the interior quality issues which have been criticised in the ID.3 and made an altogether more useful, SUV-shaped car with a proper range, plenty of space and decent performance. It sounds like it might be a real rival to the Tesla Model Y and the flood of other electric SUVs arriving in 2021.”

Nicki Says

“The ID.4 really seems to hit a sweet spot with its SUV style and practicality, and is a little easier to live with than an ID.3. But there are still some areas where it feels a bit compromised, especially on quality.”

It might not be the quickest electric SUV on sale, but the ID.4 is one of the easiest to live with day-to-day

Performance

The ID.4 has been designed to be an excellent everyday pure-electric SUV, which could explain why the regular ID.4 models are quick rather fast. The Pro Performance models, with their 77kWh battery and 201bhp rear-mounted electric motor, take a respectable 8.5 seconds to get from 0-60mph. That's more than quick enough for most family buyers, but cars like the Ford Mustang Mach-E Standard Range are nearly two seconds quicker.

To match the basic, rear-wheel-drive Mustang, you'll need the sporty ID.4 GTX which gets to to 60mph in around the same time. But, considering it has 296bhp and two electric motors at its disposal, the GTX isn't as quick as we would have liked. The smaller battery 52kWh Pure and Pure Performance models get from 0-60mph in nine and 10.9 seconds respectively.

There isn't the punch you'd expect from a standstill in any ID.4, but on the other hand the power delivery is smooth and linear and more like a petrol car.

Drive

While it might not be the quickest electric family SUV on the market, the ID.4 is easily one of the nicest to live day-to-day. Fast getaways from the traffic lights are great occasionally but a more rounded driving experience is better every day – and that best describes the ID.4. It's calm and doesn't roll about through corners and the steering is light and accurate. The 20-inch wheels on our First Edition made the ride a bit lumpy and it's a shame the regenerative brakes aren't strong enough to give one-pedal driving, but overall it's an easy and relaxing car to drive.
