Ginny Says

“People who have driven this car say it is as smooth as the most expensive luxury cars in the world, yet has the range and performance to make electric cars even more tempting to luxury car buyers. I'm even getting used to the looks.”

Tom Says

“My first thoughts were: ‘I really like the interior’ while abdicating responsibility for any thoughts on the bonkers nose, which makes me feel like I’m being unsubtly trolled by the BMW design department.”

Is the BMW iX an electric X5?

Sort of, as both the X5 and the iX are about the same size and are family SUVs. But the X5 will be sold alongside the iX for the foreseeable future.

Why isn't it called the iX5?

Good question, as the iX3 and i4 have numbers after the letters to donate its size. It's perhaps because the iX is as big inside as an X7 but is the length of an X5. There will certainly be other i models appearing soon.

What is the range of the BMW iX?

There are two models, with ranges of 257 miles or a whopping 380 miles. That's 20 miles more than a Tesla Model X Long Range.

How long does it take to charge a BMW iX?

The BMW iX 50 has a massive 111.5kWh battery - the biggest fitted to any electric car except the £2m Rimac Nevera. That means charging at home is going to take a long time - about 18 hours on a wallbox if you want to go from empty to 100%. A rapid charge is pretty quick though - pull into a service station with a 150kW rapid and you'll get from 10-80% in 35 minutes. A 350kW will be faster still.

Does it look better in the metal than it does in pictures?

It does, yes. It's not what you'd call pretty, but it is striking. BMW has a knack of setting trends, so maybe you'll like it a few years too.

How much does the BMW iX cost?

It starts at just under £70,000 but a top model with a few options will easily bust the six-figure barrier.

Can you tow with a BMW iX?

Yes, it has a towing capacity of up to 2,500kg.
