The door may have just closed for drivers wanting to benefit from the Government’s Plug-in Car Grant, with funding now focussing on infrastructure, but there are still discounts available to buyers of other all-electric vehicles.

The following categories of vehicles will still be eligible for varying amounts of government grants:

Large vans which weigh between 2,500kg and 4,250kg, have CO2 emissions below 50g/km, and can travel a minimum distance of 60 miles with zero-emissions – such as the Ford E-Transit or the Vauxhall Vivaro-e - will continue to benefit from a grant of up to £5,000 (or 35% of the vehicle purchase price).

Small vans which weigh less than 2,500kg, have CO2 emissions below 50g/km, and can travel a minimum distance of 60 miles with zero-emissions – such as the Citroën e-Berlingo or the Nissan e-NV200 – will continue to benefit from a grant of up to £2,500 (or 35% of the vehicle purchase price).

Purpose built taxis that have CO2 emissions below 50g/km, and can travel a minimum distance of 70 miles with zero-emissions  – such as the Dynamo Taxi or the LEVC TX – will continue to benefit from a grant of up to £7,500 (or 20% of the vehicle purchase price).

Motorcycles which cost below £10,000, that produce no CO2 emissions, and can travel a minimum of 31 miles before needing a charge – such as the Artisan ES1-Pro or the Vespa Elettrica – will continue to benefit from a grant of up to £500 (or 35% of the bike purchase price).

Mopeds which cost below £10,000, that produce no CO2 emissions, and can travel a minimum of 19 miles before needing a charge – such as the E-Max VS-1 or the Sunra Ronic – will continue to benefit from a grant of up to £150 (or 35% of the bike purchase price).

Additionally, a grant towards the cost of converting certain passenger vehicles so they are wheelchair accessible can also be claimed. Provided the vehicle qualified as a people carrier before conversion, can travel a minimum distance of 70 miles with zero-emissions, and costs below £35,000, it will continue to benefit from a grant of up to £2,500 (or 35% of the vehicle purchase price).

The government’s plan for the foreseeable future will be to increase the population of these groups of zero-emission electric vehicles on the road, in addition to continuing to fund improvement and availability of charging infrastructure around the nation, in a bid to expand the UK’s electric car revolt.
