Volkswagen hints ID.3 convertible could be on the cards

We already know Volkswagen's ID. range will swell to include more models such as the ID.4 SUV this year, but the firm's boss has dropped a hint a convertible might not be too far around the corner.

Volkswagen CEO Ralf Brandstätter posted on LinkedIn: "An ID.3 convertible? Sounds quite appealing: enjoying nature with the top down, with the instant, but silent electric punch. This could provide an entirely new, extraordinary feeling of freedom. I admit: a very tempting idea. We are still pondering how to turn this attractive concept into reality. Just in case, our design team has already sketched out some initial ideas."

He concluded by asking: "What do YOU think? Would electric driving and an open-air-experience make a perfect match?"

Meanwhile, VW Group CEO Herbert Diess told his 24,500 followers on Twitter: "We're thinking about an e-convertible, maybe an ID 3 convertible. What do you think?"

It shows Volkswagen is keen to give the ID.3 a bit more emotion and to make the car hark back to famous VW drop-tops like the Golf and Beetle Cabriolets.

If it got the green light, the ID.3 convertible would lose the hatchback's rear doors to improve structural rigidity, and most likely gain an electric fabric roof – partly as a reference to the Golf and Beetle but, more crucially, to save weight and complexity.

With the ID.4 SUV set to arrive imminently and ID.6 and ID. Vizzion next year, the ID.3 convertible could arrive in 2023.
