Volkswagen considers ID.7 Tourer tag for all-new electric estate

Volkswagen has recently registered the ID.7 Tourer nameplate and is expected to use it on its forthcoming large estate car. The filing made at the European Patent Office means that the German brand has earmarked ID. numbers for its entire range, from ID.1 to ID.9.

The new model was previewed by the 2019 ID. Space Vizzion concept first shown at the LA Show in America. Based on the existing MEB platform (the same universal underpinnings that sit underneath all Volkswagen’s ID. electric cars), the Space Vizzion show car featured the familiar 77kWh battery pack that is offered across the brand’s range of models. Although production was originally planned to start in late 2021, the brand’s timings were made pre-pandemic and before the current supply chain crisis. Although no official timings have been announced by Volkswagen, the brand recently confirmed that production of two new new Passat-sized models (currently known as AERO) will start at its Emden factory next year. That said, a report by German car title Auto Motor und Sport suggests that saloon production is likely to take priority over the estate, meaning the load-lugging version is more likely to arrive in 2024.

Volkswagen has found itself with something of a log-jam in terms of product names. Last year boss Herbert Diess appeared to suggest that the new model would be called the ID.6. However, the brand already uses ID.6 in China on an SUV. The recent registration of the new nameplates suggests that the brand is now planning to badge the cars ID.7 (for the saloon) and ID.7 Tourer for the estate.
