Ever wish you could get thinner just at the push of a button? Soon you will be able to buy a car which can, allowing you to squeeze into tiny gaps in traffic and the smallest of parking spaces. 

The bonkers CT-1 City Transformer is UK-bound and will be priced from £10,730, making it one of the cheapest electric vehicles on the market and comparable with some electric motorbikes. 

Created by the Israeli start-up company CT-1, the City Transformer’s most notable feature is a self-shrinking chassis which can reduce the width of the already tiny vehicle by 400mm just 1.0 metre – while driving. As a result, CT-1 says that up to four can park in one standard vehicle space when arranged sideways, meaning owners are ten times more likely to find parking.

Weighing just 590kg, the City Transformer will utilise two driving modes: City and Performance. In City mode, the vehicle will be thinner, but when performance mode is activated, the vehicle’s chassis widens to offer increased stability. 

The CT-1 has a claimed range of 112 miles and an 80% DC charge can be achieved in 30 minutes. Two 7.5kW electric motors drive the wheels at 28mph in the narrower City mode, or up to 55mph in Performance setting. 

The City Transformer is now available to pre-order for a refundable cost of £129, with CT-1 set to begin mass production in 2024.
