Suzuki has launched the new Across, a rebadged and revised version of the Toyota RAV4 supplied under a new agreement between the two brands. The new model will go head to head with a number of newly-launched hybrid SUV’s including the VW Tiguan, as well as the best-selling Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

Like the RAV4, the Across combines a 2.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor. It is powered by a comparatively-large 18.1kWh lithium ion battery mounted beneath the floor. The system gives the car decent 4x4 capability too, with both the front and rear wheels powered.

Suzuki seems to have made some efficiencies though, as the Plug-in Hybrid has CO₂ emissions of just 22g/km – 7g/km less than the Toyota. The electric-only range is 46 miles, meaning the Across will have benefit-in-kind tax rates of just 6% for company car drivers.

Prices have not been announced, but sales are set to start in the autumn.
