Porsche is offering a free update all Taycans on the road to have the same software settings as the 2023 model year cars, giving them an extra 31 miles of range and faster charging and a host of other upgrades. It will also enhance the over-the-air update capability so that most future tweaks won’t require a visit to the dealer.
The most significant change is to the powertrain in all-wheel drive models to increase efficiency by disconnecting power to the front motor in most driving conditions. The automatic brake regeneration has also been revised to be more efficient.
Meanwhile, the battery has new thermal management software which enables the Taycan to be rapidly charged more frequently. Waste heat from the electrical components, for example, is used more than before to warm the battery. For 2020 and 2021 model-year Taycans, this increases the range and allows shorter charging times.
Engineers say the peak charging rate remains the same, but is maintained for a longer time to fill the battery faster.
While you are waiting for a charge you will be able to play with the improved infotainment. In Taycan models produced in the 2020 and 2021 model years, the update integrates the Spotify app and makes Android Auto available wirelessly. Charging stations can be filtered and selected in the navigation system based on power.
The only hardware change on offer is the option to retrofit a 22 kW DC onboard charger – which is a cost extra. Beside increasing the charge speed for those with access to three-phase DC power, it also includes activation of the Plug & Charge function. This enables Tesla-style instant payment without a card or app using an encrypted communication with the charging station.
