Peugeot’s 308 goes green(ish)

​Peugeot has revealed its new 308 mid-sized family hatchback, and the line up will include two plug-in hybrid models for the first time. The new car features the new family look established by the 208 and 2008 and an interior with is said to have a ‘premium’ feel.

The 308 is available with two plug-in hybrid powertrain options, along with a petrol and diesel. There’s no pure electric version though, despite it being available on the 308’s sister car from Citroen.

The petrol and diesel ban – what does it mean?

The 308 Hybrid 180 e-EAT8 uses a 148bhp petrol engine and an 81kW electric motor, powered by a 12.4kWh lithium-ion battery. It produces an official emissions figure of 25g/km of CO₂ and can travel up to 37 miles on electric only.

The 308 is the first Peugeot to wear the brand's new badge

The top Hybrid 225 model uses a 177bhp engine mated to the same electric motor and battery set up. Its lowest CO2 figure is 26 g/km and it can travel 36 miles. This places it in the 11% band for company car BIK tax, equal to the Renault Megane PHEV but behind the 7% offered by the SEAT Leon.

Charging takes between two and seven hours

​Peugeot will offer two types of on-board charger. The standard 3.7kW and an optional 7.4kW fast charger. The estimated recharging time with the faster option is just under two hours, so expect to double that for the standard item. The 308 will go on sale later in 2021, and prices have not yet been revealed.
