New Polestar 2 models boost range and drop price

Polestar is expanding its acclaimed 2 line-up with additional of two new variants and, crucially, a new entry level price point of under £40,000. 

The range rejig means that customers can choose between three battery / motor combinations. The original 408bhp dual motor model with a 78kWh battery pack has been joined by two single-motor, front-wheel cars. These are available with either with the same long-range battery and a 228bhp electric motor, or a smaller, standard-range battery (64 kWh) and a 221bhp motor.

In terms of price and range, the entry level standard range model (64kWh battery) starts at £39,900 and has a provisional WLTP range of 260-273 miles while the long range (78kWh battery) version is priced from £42,900 and has a provisional WLTP range of 320-335 miles. The range-topping dual motor long range model is priced at £45,900 and has a WLTP range of 279-298 miles. 

In terms of design, Polestar has confirmed that the new cheaper models will be ‘largely indistinguishable’ from the launch model. That means all versions will feature 19-inch wheels, LED light designs front and rear, and Polestar’s signature frameless mirrors. Inside, the cabin features embossed upholstery made from vegan material with buyers able to choose between two colour options. Other standard features include high performance audio with 8 speakers, front- and rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera.

Polestar’s Android Automotive OS-powered infotainment system is also standard on all models while a new Polestar app adds other vehicle functionality controls, including a new Polestar Digital Key. Over-the-Air updatability which allows Polestar to release software updates to owners remotely on a regular basis is also standard. The new Polestar app and Polestar Digital Key begin rolling out to all Polestar 2 owners OTA from mid-April 2021.

Polestar buyers can choose to add two new option packs; Plus and Pilot. The former adds, among other items, a panoramic roof, Harman Kardon audio system and a new heat pump that add around 10% to the range in cold conditions. The Pilot pack adds a host of driver and safety systems, including  Pixel LED headlights with LED front fog lights and Driver Assistance with Adaptive Cruise Control and Pilot Assist.

Order books for the new models are open now with the first cars set to arrive in the  UK from September.
