More pictures and details have emerged of Kia’s new flagship electric car, called the EV6. This includes new images of a high-performance version which has Taycan-beating power and acceleration.

The car is due to be launched in the UK in October, but don’t expect it to be a budget model. Prices will start at £40,895 for the standard model, £43,895 for the GT-Line while the supercar-baiting GT will be £58.295.

The EV6 shares most of its hardware with the Hyundai Ioniq 5, which means it has a 77kWh battery pack and either a single motor powering the rear wheels or twin motors with four-wheel-drive.

The mainstream version of the car, named GT-Line, has a claimed range of 317 miles, which is better than the Ioniq’s 292 miles due to superior aerodynamics.

Caravan fans will be delighted to hear that the Kia can also tow up to 1,600kg and has the ability to power external electric devices with a load of up to 3.6kW – that’s enough for three average kettles at once. In addition to making camping trips easier, Kia say it will also make it possible to provide essential power for your home after a power cut.

When you are back ‘on grid’ and can charge, the EV6 will have 800v charging capability, something which has previously only been seen on the Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron GT. This allows much faster charging, with a five minute burst on a 350kW public rapid charger enough to give 60 miles of extra range. A charge from 10 to 80% takes just 18 minutes.

The 800v system also allows the power to reach the motors faster, opening the possibility for high performance models. In the case of the EV6 this is the e-GT, which has 572bhp – that’s more than many £200,000+ supercars and beats the Porsche Taycan 4s.

It is enough for a 0-62 time of 3.5 seconds, and Kia’s publicity video shows the car beating a selection of exotic sportscars in a drag race. More interesting to most people will be the more affordable versions of the car with smaller 58kWh batteries which will be available in 2022. The EV6 is also the first of a whole new range of electric Kias, with the range stretching from an EV1 city car up to a luxury EV9.
