Could an all-electric MG sports car be on the cards? According to a report by Autocar, the Chinese-owned brand is nearing completion on two all-new models; a large supermini to rival the Renault Zoe and a new two-door that would evoke memories of classic MGs of the past.

British buyers have already shown their love for MG’s value-packed ZS and 5  models and owners SAIC are keen to expand their presence in the European electric car market. According to the report, MG is likely to use as much of the existing ZS platform as possible to reduce development costs and bring the cars to market at a competitive price. The supermini is likely to feature a smaller battery than the ZS but could well undercut its £29k French rival - the best-selling Zoe – by a significant sum. With low production costs and the use of existing hardware, a sub £20,000 pricetag isn’t out of the question.

The main headline grabber, however, is likely be the two door sports car, which is set to be unveiled officially towards the end of the year. In a move that is likely to delight and appal MG fans in equal measure, the brand is understood to be working on a design based on the E-Motion concept car. The Autocar report suggests that the vehicle will be a four-seater coupe with twin electric motors and will be capable of supercar rivalling performance. Despite this, the brand is working on a target price of around £30,000 when it reaches UK shores.
