Maserati announces all-electric supercar is coming soon(ish)

Italian supercar maker Maserati has confirmed plans to offer an all-electric version of its all-new MC20 supercar. The brand has already given its plan a name (because that’s important), so all future electrified models will be produced under a strategy it calls Folgore. Which, for all non-Italian speakers out there means Thunderbolt. Maserati bosses made the announcement at a launch event which it called 'MMXX: Time to be Audacious', which sounds more like a Bill and Ted movie than a car launch to us.

Anyway, the news of a fully electric MC20 is welcome as to date Maserati has been a little slow out of the blocks when it comes to embracing EV tech. In June, the brand launched a mild-hybrid version of its Ghibli saloon, but to date that’s about it.

The MC20 certainly looks the part and while the electric version is still on the drawing board for now, the promise of an all-EV model rather than a plug-in is something to look forward to. No details beyond the confirmation of the project have been given by Maserati bosses so even the basics such as battery size, range, performance and cost are still a mystery at present. As is the launch date, which given that the petrol model is the brand’s priority, is unlikely to be soon. Until then, enjoy our electrifying.com image of what it might look like when it does arrive.

Maserati will also branch out into other areas of the car market with its electrifying plans. At the same launch event, bosses showed a mock-up of a mid-size Porsche Macan-rivalling SUV which will be available in both V6 petrol and full electric power. Badged Grecale, it will join the new Maserati GranTurismo and GranCabrio in being be the brand's first cars to adopt 100% electric powertrains. They will be engineered in Modena and built at the Turin production hub.

Maserati isn’t the only brand electrifying the supercar market. 2021 will see the launch of the Lotus Evija – a British-built machine with a claimed 1,970bhp. Lotus has also claimed that despite its tyre-shredding power, it will still return up to 250 miles on a charge from its 70kWh battery.

Elsewhere, Elon Musk is readying the Tesla Roadster which, its maker already claims will be “The quickest car in the world, with record-setting acceleration, range and performance.” Available to reserve now, Tesla claims the Roadster will hit 0-62mph in under two seconds and a 620 mile range. At this point, the Tesla card will be the one to have in a game of Supeprcar Top Trumps.
