MG is planning to revive its classic roadster with an all-electric two-seater, and plans to launch it in the UK as early as 2024. The Chinese brand has submitted patent applications in Europe which show that it is fully committed to bringing an all-electric two-seater soft-top to the market. Typically, patent applications are made following a final sign-off of design, which suggests that a 2024 launch date, which would mark MG’s centenary.
First announced at the 2021 Shanghai Auto Show with the reveal of the well-received Cyberster concept, the new patents – which Electrifying.com has created detailed visuals from – show the roadster's profile has changed from the original concept.
As-yet unnamed MG roadster will feature two seats and rear-wheel drive Although many elements have been modified for production, including the wheels and lights, the new MG will be the first purpose-built open-top roadster on the market. While Porsche has already confirmed that its next-generation Boxster will be battery powered, it is unlikely to arrive before 2025. The patent drawings appear to show a hard-top, although the lack of any shut lines suggest that this may be a removable cover rather than a folding design. A fabric roof, which harks back to classic MGs is likely to be offered as standard.
Battery specifications and technical details are not shown in the patent drawings, but MG has a number of suitable platforms on which to base the new roadster. The forthcoming MG4 is built on a rear-wheel drive platform that could be perfectly suited to a sports car layout.
In terms of price, MG bosses will be keen to pitch the newcomer as close to the market-leading Mazda MX-5, which currently costs £23,500. The brand is hoping to attract a younger audience following the successful introduction of the MG5 estate and MGZS SUV in the European market. Should MG’s launch schedule go to plan, the new roadster will mark MG’s 100th birthday, having been founded by Cecil Kimber in Oxford in 1924.
