French performance brand Alpine has confirmed its first all-electric car – and it's a crossover.

Alpine, Renault's sporting division, is best known for petrol-powered performance cars and currently builds the A110 – a low volume sports car. Now, however, it has revealed plans to enter the electric space.

Dubbed the GT X-Over, the new crossover will be one of three electric models launched by Alpine as Renault seeks to expand the revived performance brand. The other models are expected to be a small EV based on the forthcoming Renault 5 and a new sports car to replace the A110.

The GT X-Over will be based on Renault's new CMF-EV platform which has already been rolled out for the Nissan Ariya and Renault Megane E-Tech SUVs. Considering the sporting heritage behind the Alpine name, the GT X-Over crossover will likely have more power than the most powerful Ariya – the e-4orce 87kWh Performance – which packs 389bhp from its twin electric motors.

Alpine says the new car will be built at its Dieppe factory in 2025 which is currently being upgraded to build electric cars.

Laurent Rossi, CEO of Alpine, said: “Alpine’s history is legendary! Its unique heritage can be seen in car racing with the equally legendary A110, and the future holds strong ambitions for the brand and its products. "The announcement of the upcoming GT X-Over being made at the Manufacture Alpine Dieppe is proof that the future is being written in a location of historical importance for Renault.”
