Hyundai has confirmed final UK specifications and prices for its award-winning IONIQ 5 hatch. The update introduces a larger battery pack, more range, a number of software improvements and the introduction of a range-topping Namsan Edition model.

The updates come just over a year after the first IONIQ 5 models arrived in the UK and confirm Hyundai’s intention to keep its in-demand model competitive with rivals. As before, customers can choose between two battery options. However, while the 58kWh version remains the same, the larger pack has grown in size to 77.4kWh (from 72.6kWh). This puts in on a par with the Kia EV6 with which it shares its platform and running gear.

Although Hyundai has yet to publish official WLTP consumption figures, the brand estimates that the official range will be around 315 miles - an increase of around 20 miles – for the RWD long range model. The AWD model is expected to have a WLTP figure of around 295 miles. Hyundai has also increased power outputs for the larger battery models. The RWD sees power rise from 212bhp to 225bhp while the AWD model output rises from 301bhp to 321bhp. 

Along with the new 77.4 kWh battery, the updated IONIQ 5 will be available with video-based digital interior and exterior mirrors for the first time. Mounted in rear spoiler, the Digital Centre Mirror (DCM) replaces the conventional rear view mirror.

The updated model also introduces a new battery heater and conditioning feature as standard across the range. The move follows criticism from owners concerning the lack of battery heating in launch Premium models. The updated set-up will allow IONIQ 5 to adapt its battery temperature while travelling to support optimal charging conditions when reaching the charging point, improving real-life charging performance in hot or cold ambient conditions. This function activates automatically when a high-power charging point is entered into the vehicle’s navigation system using connected routing. 

As part of the updated range, Hyundai is adding a new range-topping Namsan Edition model. Named after Namsan Mountain in the city of Seoul, it features a full-length panoramic roof, leather upholstery and relaxation seats. The Namsan Edition will also offer Digital Side Mirrors (DSM). Already available for Korean-spec IONIQ 5 models, this feature will be available in Europe for the first time in a Hyundai Motor Group vehicle. 

In what Hyundai describes as a range realignment, the SE Connect 58 kWh is priced from £39,400 – an increase of £1,800 over the outgoing model). From £41,900 on the road, Premium models receive new standard equipment including the Vehicle to Load (V2L) system, previously a cost option, part leather upholstery, upgraded soft touch interior including 64 colour ambient lighting and sliding centre console. Also available on the Premium is a optional heat pump (£995) that enhances the efficiency of the battery during inclement weather by heating the cabin as opposed to using the high voltage battery to power the heating system. 

Now priced from £48,400, the Ultimate trim now offers the previous cost options of blind view monitor and surround view monitor as standard, which join 20” alloy wheels, privacy glass, heated and ventilated front seats, with heated rear, BOSE premium sound system and augmented reality head up display. Customer options include a Heat Pump as well as a revised Tech Pack that features Remote Smart Park Assist (RSPA), Parking Collision Avoidance (PCA), Automatic flush door handles, driver seat position memory function and relaxation seats on both driver and passenger seats.

The Namsan Edition is priced from £52,900, and includes Digital Side Mirrors that replace traditional door mirrors with externally mounted cameras that projects their image onto OLED monitors. The Namsan Edition will also introduce a standard full length vision roof, Heat Pump and Tech Pack as standard.

Order books are open now with first deliveries expected by the end of the year. 

Hyundai IONIQ 5 Long Range models will be fitted with a larger 77.4kWh battery pack that pushes the range to more than 300 miles
