Fisker has announced that it plans to launch a third all-electric model in 2024 - even though production has yet to start on its first, the Ocean SUV. The ambitious plans were announced by company boss Henrik Fisker, who confirmed that the new car was being developed as Project Ronin. The news comes less than three months after Fisker announced that its second model, badged Pear was under development.
Revealing a sketch of the Ronin, Fisker said:”The aim is to achieve the world's longest range for a production EV, combined with extremely high levels of performance. Project Ronin will be a showcase for our internal engineering, powertrain, and software capabilities.”
Although Fisker has yet to reveal how long the range will be, or how much performance it will have, the brand claims that the Ronin will be a touring sports car suitable for long road trips while carrying four adults and their luggage.
Henrik Fisker's brief to the engineering team was to use the most advanced, lightweight materials and focus on range, performance, and overall driving experience. According to the brand’s press release, Ronin will feature active aerodynamic technologies and what it describes as ‘an innovative battery design’, with the pack integrated into the structure of the vehicle. By making the pack structural – as it is in the latest US-built Tesla Model Y – designers have greater freedom in terms of interior packaging.
Fisker also adds that the Ronin will feature unique doors for easier access and a sustainable vegan interior that plots a new, advanced design direction that will be incorporated into future models. However, given that Fisker has yet to start production of its first car, the suggestion that it has already established a new design direction for new ones is an unusual approach.
Fisker expects to reveal Project Ronin in August 2023, with production starting in the second half of 2024. Meanwhile, the brand is still planning to start volume production of the Ocean SUV at a new plant at Magna in Austria. Fisker claims to have secured more than 40,000 reservations for the Ocean and is confident of converting a large proportion of those into firm orders. Fisker will open pre-order reservations for purchase of the limited edition £59,900 Fisker Ocean One SUV to current reservation holders on July 1, 2022, with other models set to follow.
