It's got the looks and the figures stack up well, but the Peugeot isn't as good to drive or as spacious as its key rivals.

Tom Says

“Peugeot currently has some of the best-looking, most rational cars on sale in the UK. Fight me, internet. The 508 plug-in manages just under 40 miles of e-range, and there’s a super-useful, lovely looking estate variant as well as the saloon. Rivals might do some things better but don't look as good.”

Nicki Says

“The 508 is a genuinely good-looking car, and its a long time since anything in this area of the market had the ability to genuinely turn heads with its styling. Rivals might be bigger, drive better and be cheaper to run but I might be tempted to let my heart rule my head on this one and choose the 508 just for the way it looks.”

The 2019 508 Hybrid is too new to have filtered widely onto the used market, yet, but you can pick up an ex-demonstrator or two, and there’s existing pre-registered stock available with healthy discounts.

If you do go for the 508 Hybrid, reliability promises to be good. While the 508 is too new to have been included on owner surveys just yet, the closely related 3008 has been rated highly in ownership surveys. You also get that three-year, unlimited mileage warranty, while the battery is covered by an eight year, 100,000 mile warranty that also protects against performance loss if the car’s maximum range drops below 70% of what it was when new.

Believe it or not, there was a diesel-electric hybrid Peugeot 508 in the last generation, which was sold between 2010 and 2018. Very few were sold, and even fewer are available on the used market, but they are out there. These four-wheel drive 508s were not plug-in hybrids but were ‘full’ hybrids like those in Toyota and Lexus models, only with a diesel engine. They offered very little pure electric running and didn’t offer the sort of real-world economy you’d expect so we wouldn’t recommend it as a used buy.
