Range
There are two versions of the Model X to choose from, and even the less-efficient Performance will manage to go 340 miles between charges if you are careful, or around 300 of normal driving. The cheaper Long Range adds just a few miles to that, thanks to smaller tyres which don’t drag as much on the road. Whichever version you choose, it’s one of the longest ranges of any electric car on the road.
Bear in mind that it’s easy to shrink that available distance though. The Model X has the ability to carry seven people and be as fast as a dragster. Use either of those and the available range will tumble.
Battery
There is now only one battery capacity available in the Model X, as the smaller 75kWh option has been dropped. It’s a whopping 100kWh pack, which is one of the biggest available on any electric car and gives it the amazing performance and range.
The battery pack is both warmed and cooled to make sure it performs well in all weather conditions and can handle the heat generated by fast driving and Supercharging. It is mounted beneath the floor to make sure the heaviest parts of the car are low down, making it feel very stable on the road.
Charging
The Model X has the ability to use any public charging point and the network of Tesla Superchargers and ‘destination’ points too – which makes it more convenient to charge than any other electric car.
‘Filling’ the battery completely takes a reasonable chunk of time, purely because it has such a big capacity, but a 15 minute stop at one of the Superchargers (found at service stations and other locations on major routes) should add 80-100 miles, and other (slower) Tesla-only points are now installed at places such as hotels and shopping centres. Tesla occasionally offers Model S and X owners free Supercharging, otherwise there is a cost but it’s reasonable and certainly cheaper than fuel.
