The Kangoo is a useful and affordable small van for businesses who don’t need to carry huge loads or go long distances.

“The range isn't great and you need to bear in mind that this will drop once it’s fully loaded, but it’s a good option if you’re not travelling long distances and as with all vans, comes with good tax breaks for business drivers.”

“Excellently practical box-shape from Renault. This borrows the motor and battery from the Renault Zoe and works as a very practical take on an battery electric van. Now, if they ever do a 4x4 Kangoo with two motors, things would get really interesting…”

The Kangoo ZE is designed to carry things around towns. It does that task adequately, but it’s never going to be fast or fun to drive.

Performance

Even without a load on board, the Kangoo ZE’s 60bhp output is merely adequate and the performance figures of up to 22.4 seconds to 60mph mean it is officially one of the slowest vehicles on the road. For comparison, a Renault Zoe hatchback does the 0-60 test in 8.1 seconds and a Nissan e-NV200 van manages it in 14 seconds.

To be fair, the Kangoo doesn’t seem that slow around town, and as the electric motor provides all of its pulling power as soon as you press the accelerator pedal. It means you can nip into gaps and pull away from a standstill reasonably smartly, so it rarely feels underpowered even when fully laden or going up steep hills. But once the speedo hits 30 mph the oomph starts to tail off and it takes an age to get up to motorway speeds. The official top speed is 81 mph – that’s 10mph higher than the Nissan e-NV200 – but you’ll be ready for retirement by the time you get there.

Drive

There are some vans which are surprisingly good fun to drive, even though they are clearly built to do a job. Unfortunately, the Kangoo ZE isn’t one of them. It’s not awful, but there is little in the way of entertainment and this van feels like it is built to do a job as painlessly as possible rather than offer any rewards.

As a result, the steering is light and doesn’t offer any sort of feedback about what might be going on under the wheels. When it is unladen, the suspension is a little bouncy and the body leans over when you’re cornering. All this might be designed to discourage driving quickly though, as the thin eco tyres don’t offer too much grip either.

Perhaps we are being a little harsh, since this is not supposed to be a performance vehicle and if you’re driving around town the Kangoo ZE’s silent motor is a lot more pleasant than having the noise and vibration of a diesel engine. As there are no gears, you’ll not have to pump a clutch constantly either.
