Bentley’s first trip into the luxury plug-in hybrid sector. Traditional Bentley craftsmanship without typical Bentley mpg… as long as you remember to plug it in.

Ginny Says

“Massive SUVs really aren’t the best if you’re looking to go greener, but if you must have a posh, plush plug-in, then this is right up there.”

Tom Says

“Not the most desirable Bentayga - the V8 fits that bill - but a decent semi-electrified luxo-barge that allows for limited urban EV-only running.”

Small battery means a short charging time. With only a 17.3kWh battery to top up, charging will take under 30 minutes. You’ll struggle to top 20-miles in EV-only mode, but add in the ICE and you’ll get further than any other Bentley at over 450 miles.

Range

You’ll struggle to top 20 miles in EV-only mode (we managed around 16), even though the official WLTP figure tops out at 24. Obviously that’s not so much of a problem when you add in the fact that you can then rely on the petrol engine,  which gives you a combined 450+ mile range. But it’s better to plug in regularly and make use of the electric motor if you want to save on fuel and make the most of the silence.

Battery

The Bentayga has a relatively small battery- at 17.3kWh it is about the same size as the pack fitted to the Smart Fortwo EQ. In electric mode it has a lot of car to move about though, so the motor rips through the charge in less than 20 miles.

The battery pack sits under the boot floor, so you do lose an almost imperceptible little bit of luggage space. Not that you’d notice particularly. But on the upside, the small battery is lighter and quicker to charge which means you don’t have any excuse not to top up when you can.

Charging

As you might expect from a car that costs more than the average kidney on the black market, the Bentayga comes with all the charging cables (CCS2) that you might need. It does seem very odd seeing a big Bentley plonked on a charging station, mind. Though we’ll have to get used to that. The battery will fill up on a home charger (which is included when you buy the car) in about two and a half hours, but you can also use a 50kW DC rapid charger, which will see it topped off in less time that it takes to buy a paper and a coffee.
