South Korean brand Hyundai and its sister firm Kia have been on sale in the UK for decades, but it took a while for both to be considered seriously by badge-obsessed Brits. That changed about a decade ago – and particularly so in the past five years – thanks to Hyundai’s excellent range of electrified models. Its Ioniq was the first car to be offered as a hybrid, plug-in hybrid and as a full-electric, while the Kona Electric quickly became a top-seller and one of the best value electric cars you could buy thanks to its low cost and big range. Along with Kia, Hyundai launched a bespoke electric car platform in 2021 and the first Hyundai to use it is the Ioniq 5 – a roomy, retro-looking hatchback with a near-300-mile range.
